Bears’ Cameron Meredith carted off field after gruesome leg injury

Chicago’s receiving corps has taken a major hit.

Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith suffered a gruesome left leg injury in Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Titans and will not return to the game.

The team believes Meredith has a torn ACL, Fox Sports’ Pam Oliver reported from the game.

Meredith endured a hard hit after a 16-yard reception and was carted off the field during the first quarter.

Colin Kaepernick said comments he made about Fidel Castro, perceived as support for the controversial late Cuban president, were taken “completely out of context” in the lead-up to Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Boos rained down on the San Francisco 49ers quarterback during pre-game introductions at Hard Rock Stadium, a common occurrence at road games in the aftermath of season-long national anthem protests. Afterward, Kaepernick was asked to clear the air about a tense exchange with a reporter Wednesday in which he spoke favorably of some Cuban policies under Castro’s communist regime.

“What I said was I agree with the investment into education,” he told reporters after a 31-24 loss to the Dolphins. “I also agree with the investment in free universal healthcare, as well as his involvement in helping to end apartheid in South Africa. I would hope that everybody agrees those things are good things.

“Trying to push the false narrative that I was a supporter of the oppressive things that he did is just not true.”seahawks_102

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope agrees to sign with Lakers for one-year, $18 million deal, per report

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has agreed to a one-year, $18 million deal with the Lakers, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. There were plenty of teams interested in grabbing KCP for their roster, but the Lakers appear to the the best suitor. The Pistons renounced their rights to KCP after trading for Avery Bradley, making him one of the best free agents available. This is certainly a situation for Caldwell-Pope to bet on himself as he’ll become a free agent again next summer. He’ll have plenty of opportunity to do that in Los Angeles next season.

The trade allows the Raptors to fit Kyle Lowry’s three-year, $100 million contract into the payroll without saddling themselves in luxury tax. But it creates a gaping hole at the small forward spot, a position exposed last season as LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo ran amok against the Toronto defense.

The Raptors also lost physical defender P.J. Tucker to the Houston Rockets via free agency. Promising, young reserve Norman Powell figures to move into the starting rotation.

For Carroll, the trade is a reunion with head coach Kenny Atkinson, who he played under during his tenure with the Atlanta Hawks. Carroll is a scrappy two-way forward who has developed into a serviceable three-point shooter midway through his career. With two more years left on his contract, the 30-year-old junkyard dog joins a Nets team that jumpstarted its rebuild and youth movement by trading for D’Angelo Russell ahead of the NBA Draft.

Carroll averaged a career-best 12.6 points on 39.5 percent shooting from downtown with the Hawks in the 2014-15 season. He unfortunately suffered a right knee contusion that required surgery the following season, an injury he has struggled to rebound from.

We’re now done with the wet blanket portion.

Steph beating four players over just 36 holes in one event on the Web.com Tour does not mean he could be a pro golfer. It’s two rounds. We’ve see Rory McIlroy get roasted by top college players and ams at the occasional major. That’s the fickle nature of the game, and it’s always dangerous mining grand theories from small sample sizes.

Clayton Geathers Jersey The week-to-week and year-over-year consistency is what separates Rory from a top amateur or great player on the Web.com Tour. Steph’s first two rounds were incredible, but taking it as a sign that he could play professional golf, even on the Web.com Tour, is deluded.

Mikkel Boedker Limited Jersey We’re now done with the wet blanket portion. This is perfectly fine! Steph’s 74-74 is still an amazing accomplishment, and he’s quite good at other pursuits. No golfer is going to an NBA D-league game and doing the equivalent of Steph’s 74-74, not even Dustin Johnson, who, as you may have heard on every single broadcast, can dunk a basketball. Steph is better at golf than 99 percent of the world and better at basketball than (arguably!) everyone.

If expansion happens, it’s almost guaranteed that Seattle will see the Supersonics return, assuming they can work out their stadium issues. But no other location is a perfect fit, as Ziller notes.

The most appealing market, the enormous Mexico City, would be an incredible experiment. It’s home to almost nine million people and its main stadium, Arena Ciudad de Mexico, draws rave reviews from teams that play there. (The NBA announced Wednesday that it would again be playing two games there this season on Dec. 7 and 9.) But infrastructure problems could make hosting a team there full-time difficult, and it’s also more than 750 miles away from any other NBA team.

8 reasons the ‘NBA 2K18′ trailer is so freakin’ good

Limited Andre Iguodala Jersey 2K Sports released the trailer for its highly anticipated, flagship videogame franchise, NBA 2K18, and the introductory video lived up to the hype.

The trailer featured NBA stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Paul George, but also showed some up-and-comers like D’Angelo Russell, Lonzo Ball, and Malik Monk.

I’m talking about Steven Adams’ mustache.

Enes Kanter tweeted a recent photo of Adams, or at least I think it’s him. It’s honestly been so long since we’ve seen Adams without a mustache that I thought this was a random photo of Roger Federer or Tommy Wiseau taking a selfie during a hunting trip. But no, it’s actually Steven Adams.

Limited Ron Brooks Jersey Without the mustache, the brotherhood between Adams and Enes Kanter wouldn’t have been the same. They named themselves the Stache Bros for a reason. What would they have named themselves if both weren’t sporting a furry upper lip? Thunder and Lightning? That’s nowhere near as cool as Stache Bros. Their MVP campaign video for Westbrook wouldn’t have had the suave sophistication that we have come to love.

Farmar was on the Los Angeles Lakers teams that matched up against the Celtics in the 2008 and 2010 Finals. He was always a reserve player, serving as Derek Fisher’s backup at point guard, but posted double digits twice against the Celtics in 2008 and was firmly in the rotation when the Lakers won in 2010.

Granger wasn’t particularly brilliant against Rivers’ teams, but it wasn’t exactly advanced scouting to sign him. The 2009 All-Star had just been cut after the Indiana Pacers dumped his salary on the Philadelphia 76ers, and Granger chose L.A. over the Heat, Spurs, Rockets and Mavericks. Still, we’ll count it. That’s three! Granger played with the Heat the next year, but hasn’t found another NBA job.

We added avocados to 7 iconic sports moments so millennials would appreciate sports for once in their miserable lives

This week Time Magazine revealed that millennials are in love with the phrase “hold my avocado.” It’s their new catch phrase they use to show off. Avocados have been around for decades, but it’s proof that these freeloading millennials won’t care about anything unless there’s avocado on it. Let’s make them care about sports.

Malcolm Jenkins was one of the players who joined Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest during the 2016 season. He told ESPN on Aug. 10 that he would continue his protest into this season.

“Last season, I raised my fist as a sign of solidarity to support people, especially people of color, who were and are still unjustly losing their lives at the hands of officers with little to no consequence,” he said. “After spending time with police officers on ride-alongs, meeting with politicians on the state and federal level and grassroots organizations fighting for human rights, it’s clear that our criminal justice system is still crippling communities of color through mass incarceration.”

Jenkins concluded with, “I want to challenge those who stay silent to be courageous and use your platforms to become part of the solution. God bless.”

So far the preseason has shown that national anthem protests are here to stay, and Long’s support for Jenkins has already inspired others. On Friday night, Seahawks center Justin Britt put his arm on teammate Michael Bennett while Bennett sat during the national anthem.

Nobody has been hurt because of fighting

Later on the West Coast, the Seahawks visit LA to take on the Chargers. Seattle returns several injured players from the end of the 2016 season, including Earl Thomas. At running back, Eddie Lacy will make his Seahawks debut.

Youth Colin Kaepernick Jersey The Chargers, on the other hand, are breaking in a new city and a new head coach, Anthony Lynn. They’ll also have a new defensive coordinator — Gus Bradley, who spent four seasons as the Seahawks’ DC. A revamped offensive line will get a chance to work together and while Philip Rivers likely won’t play much, the backup quarterback competition could pick up between Kellen Clemens and Cardale Jones.

Nobody has been hurt because of fighting, yet.

The Bengals can probably credit luck for part of that since the fight at their practice started with Vontaze Burfict diving at Gio Bernard’s knees, which ranks as the dumbest fight in any camp so far.

But we’ve got a variety of them, from a minor scuffle to one that actually resulted in bleeding. We’ll keep the rankings updated as the fights continue.

Broncos rookie tight end Jake Butt already has it made. His cheeky last name landed him a Charmin endorsement before he was even drafted. But Butt should take it one step further and propel his name and celebrity into a successful barbecue joint.

You see, there’s no better barbecued meat than a nice pork butt. There’s no doubt that Butt endured quite a bit of teasing as a kid because of his surname, so we’d be more than happy to see him profit off it now.

If Yu Darvish is available, the Dodgers should trade for him

The Dodgers have won the National League West in each of the last four seasons, and, as they sit 11.5 games up in the division as of this writing, they’ll likely make that five in a row. Los Angeles has been eliminated from the postseason in each of the last four years, despite the advantage that comes with winning the division and also being the team with Clayton Kershaw. The furthest they’ve advanced is Game 6 of the NLCS.

The racism and xenophobia endemic to MLB is proven often, but in few places is it more clear than in the demographics of leadership. The hope is that this keeps pushing MLB in the right direction of necessary change. Though the suit singles Torre out for personal animus, it specifically discusses that the issue at hand is a systemic mistreatment of minorities, not limited to umpires.

The number of minorities in leadership positions is a telltale sign of the discrimination at play. Selig’s Rule hasn’t brought about the change it needed to. There are only two black managers in baseball (Dusty Baker and Dave Roberts) and one Latino manager. The limited power that minorities hold is not only alarming but also makes the league less appealing and more difficult to grow.

After the 2001 game, Torre told the media that Hernandez just wanted to be noticed over there, a sentiment that has been echoed in his evaluations since 2001 when Torre joined as Chief Baseball Officer. However, Hernandez’s suit also centers around charges of racial discrimination in MLB’s promotion and postseason assignment policies — which, I mean, yeah, who’d be surprised?

Game Youth Wesley Walker Jersey Hernandez hasn’t umpired a World Series game since 2005 despite high internal ratings, and his four applications to become a crew chief were denied in favor of less experienced, generally white umpires.

Aaron Judge’s Derby dingers defied even NASA’s best calculations

Everyone knows by now that Aaron Judge is a complete beast when he steps to the plate. Whether he is about to become the new face of baseball — which he almost certainly will be if he keeps this up because he plays for the Yankees and can hit the ball so very, very far — Judge is fun to watch right now.

He was especially fun to watch during this week’s Home Run Derby, which he won with ease and style, hitting small balls with a stick until they traveled more than 500 feet to the furthest reaches of the ballpark as the crowd went nuts for his impressive performance. One of them (two if you count his show of force in batting practice before the event) even managed to ping off the roof as if he were hitting balls at his local indoor batting cage.

The Cubs have been lurking in the background of the relief market, making less headlines than their competitors in Washington, Los Angeles or Houston. If Wilson heads to Chicago, he would close next season if Wade Davis departs in free agency while giving the club an excellent late-relief option for the rest of this year.
JC Tretter Mens Jersey
Houston is known to be looking for elite relief help, but a major-league source indicated earlier in the weekend that Detroit’s asking price for Wilson was considered very high. The Astros (and the Dodgers, for that matter) have one of the strongest farm systems in baseball, so the club may be willing to part with some key young pieces to land Wilson.

Wilson, who turns 30 next month, owns a 2.68 ERA and 12.3 K/9 in 40.1 innings for Detroit this season. His trade value is aided by his contract situation, as he is owed $2.7 million this year and is under control for 2018.

Colts owner Jim Irsay offers vague update on Andrew Luck

Colts owner Jim Irsay said Sunday he is encouraged by the progress Andrew Luck has made in his recovery from shoulder surgery, but he stopped short of promising the star quarterback would be ready for the team’s Week 1 game at the Rams.

Luck is throwing the football, just not at full strength, Irsay said, per multiple reports on Twitter. The Colts don’t want to rush Luck back into action and have no timetable for his return.

“Any time you lose a guy that started [nearly] every game for you last year, that’s not ideal,” Gase said, via ESPN. “But that’s why we’ve collected the depth that we have, and that’s why we’re trying to get young players to go, because this is what happens.”

It’s a tough blow for the Dolphins, who already have lost quarterback Ryan Tannehill and linebacker Raekwon McMillan for the season because of knee injuries.

Also, guard Ted Larsen was placed on injured reserve with a biceps injury, and running backs Jay Ajayi and Kenyan Drake have undetermined timelines as they recover from concussions.

Lippett led the Dolphins in interceptions last season with four and made 67 tackles. He was expected to be an active backup this year behind Byron Maxwell and Xavien Howard and special-teams contributor.

I’m confident in that because, you know, it’s been my life in a lot of ways. I don’t take that lightly.

J.P. Losman and Todd Collins have strong cases, too, but they were just good enough to avoid this dubious distinction. Instead it’s Van Pelt, who was more Charlie Brown in relation to football in Buffalo. He went 3-8 as a starter, first in 1997 and again in 2001. One of many Jim Kelly failed successors, he was the anti-Dan Marino out of Pittsburgh. Van Pelt finished his career with a 64.1 rating. At least he’s in a great spot now, as Aaron Rodgers’ quarterback coach in Green Bay.dolphins_091

The Cubs know the power of power arms in the bullpen during a playoff push.

This question has been hanging over Pirates fans for what has to feel like forever. The face of that revitalized franchise struggled through an extended rough stretch, but his production over the past couple of months has been back to his MVP-caliber levels. McCutchen hit three more home runs Sunday — that would be quite the appropriate final game, right? — and now has a .370 average, 16 homers, 46 RBIs and a 1.158 OPS over his past 57 games. The odds of McCutchen staying in Pittsburgh long-term remain low, and maybe today is when the Pirates trade him. They’re 51-54 on the season, 5.5 out in the NL Central and 8.5 back of the second wild-card spot.

Britton is one of what feels like a thousand Orioles who are slated to become free agents after the 2018 season, and he’s probably the most movable at this moment, considering how much contenders love to add stoppers to their bullpen for the postseason. He’s had injury issues this season, no doubt, but he’s healthy now and just recorded saves in back-to-back games, which is a good sign he’s back to form.

Aroldis Chapman added an anchor to last year’s Cubs team that broke the franchise’s 108-year championship drought. This year they have a World Series-winning closer to anchor the ninth inning in Wade Davis, who struck out 18 in 10 2/3 scoreless innings during Kansas City’s run to the 2015 title. Many see C.J. Edwards as a future closer; he has a 2.11 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings.
Limited Womens Vick Ballard Jersey
Tigers lefty Justin Wilson has been really good this season as Detroit’s closer, and he wouldn’t cost as much as Britton. Like Britton, he’s clearly more than a situational lefty.
